CANDLE IN THE TOMB

Candle in the Comb is a 2016 Chinese web series based on the novel Ghost Blows Out the Light. It is directed by Kong Sheng, produced by Hou Hongliang and stars Jin DongJoe Chen and Zhao Da. It tells the story of a gang of tomb raiders as they go on adventures and unearth the truth behind a mysterious curse.
After watching the documentary about making this TV show, I'm deeply amazed by the works that had been done. The story happened several decades ago. Different scenes are included like the desert, underground "comb", snow mountain and so on.  The
scriptwriting and all of the lines and atmosphere were meticulous arranged and designed. The group spent months testing all the equipment and camera angles. The director and editors expressed that they wanted to try them best to represent the story as vivid and moved as possible.
One scene that impressed me is about a comb monster underground crowed out of the coffin. The monster is two meters tall and he has a scary face. I'm scared so hard when watching it. The video upon shows us how the make-up group designed and made the monster. The actor is a basketball player who is two more meters tall. The effort which the group put into to create such an impressive look is unbelievable. The conceptual art of this character needed to be determined first. After considering the time of the story and the concept and the character, the process of making the appearance started. It was not a one-time success, the group spent two months imagining, modeling and fixing the work. The hair, the clothes, the muscles, the feet, and the coloring are all completed carefully and diligent. It took five hours every time to put makeup on the actor.  It was an interesting process establishing the character and with the embellish of special effects, the final result was amazing.

Another part that amazed me is the scene in the desert. Tons of sands were used to create the atmosphere. Real camels were brought to the crew. The ants made by animation and special effects are so lively. People got hurt in the shooting process but they were all so brave and tolerant. The whole group was holding together like a family.

It was such a great experience watching this program and after knowing the behind-scene effort and how much work they put in, I admire all the people working in films include directors, editors, designers, actors and other people helping out in the crew. It is always not easy to accomplish something perfectly. Challenges and problems are coming out through the process.  How to face and solve them becomes the key to success.

Salute to all filmmakers!
